sans-appendix

Hey, did you hear that I had my appendix removed on Sunday?
I thought I might have food poisoning on Saturday afternoon.
I got home from a women's luncheon thing at church and wanted
to spend some time with Aaron (I spent Friday night at my mom's
house because we got so much snow on Friday that it was safer
to spend the night in Apple Valley vs driving home) I wanted
to hang out with Aaron, take care of a few errands and do very
little. We went grocery shopping quick as soon as I got home.
My stomach hurt walking behind the cart. The smell of
do-it-yourself, one-stop Chinese food samples made me nauseated.
I wanted to go home as soon as possible. I started feeling miserable
around 4pm. Pretty soon even sitting up on the couch was too much.
So... off to bed I went at 6pm on a Saturday night (man, I'm cool).
I didn't sleep very much Saturday night - despite my very comfy bed.
Awake from pain, sort of asleep, awake from pain, asleep...
And I was soooo super chilled that I had like 3 blankets on. YUK.

Needless to say we didn't make it to church or to watch football
with friends Sunday afternoon. I offered to help a friend paint too.
That didn't happen (sorry Heidi) because we finally decided
to go to the Emergency Room after Aaron looked my symptoms
up online and decided I might have Appendicitis.
Please bear in mind, I hadn't showered or brushed my teeth.
So before we left, I changed my underwear (sorry if that's TMI)
and I brushed my teeth and we were off to the ER.
We got checked in. They added an IV and took lots of blood.
I got to drink some REALLY gross contrast for my CT scan.
And we watched football while we waited. It was an interesting
wait though. I noticed a few things during our time in the ER:

1. the clientele is varied (there was someone yelling/laughing
for over 1 hour continuously - and I'm not exaggerating at all
2. the doctor that came in to see me had his scrub pants WAY
too high, which was a huge distraction for me.
3. the docs now have scribes that follow them around and take
dictation so the doctors don't have to dictate at the end of their shift.
4. I hurt worse after the CT scan than before, which was weird
5. the ER often smells like vomit (gross)
6. I don't feel like I was part of an episode of Grey's Anatomy.

The CT scan came back positive for Appendicitis so they
eventually wheeled me into pre-op and make me drink more
really, really nasty contrast liquid (YUK). Because I had to wait
for a C-section, they gave me morphine to help with the pain.
I learned I'm likely allergic to morphine like my grandpa.
I itched something fierce before surgery but I hurt less.
Fortunately I don't remember surgery and I survived!
I lived to tell you about it and have one less appendix. The
surgeon that operated on me told Aaron that it was good it came
out when it did because it was pretty infected. Just glad it didn't
rupture like my dad's did years ago. Again I'm alive, yay!

It's funny what you take for granted. This is the only surgery
I've had but not being able to walk normally or get out of bed
normally is strange. I miss being able to get into bed without
a step-stool for a boost. I can't sleep on my stomach either.
And blogging makes me tired. So... on that sleepy note,
I'm going to close my eyes and either go to bed or nap a while.

The moral of this story is that I'm ok and God is good.
Oh, and the appendix is a stupid organ.

Welcome to the club! I got mine out when I was nine and it's great once you get over feeling sore. Hang in there! Did you get it out laparoscopic or with the big incision? Glad you are sans-appendix. You never have to worry about it again! Agree that it's a stupid organ! Curious if it's hereditary. We'll have to compare notes someday and see if our kids got them out too (I see that your dad did). Merry Christmas!

Oh no!!! John had his appendix out too....except as soon as he got home I was generous enough to share the flu with him. Needless to say he was in tons of pain PLUS really sore!!
